Balloon+Robot=Babot!
Shiro Takahashi, a pioneer in the field of media art since the 1960s, has created BABOT, a series of “ pneumatic sculptures” invented by Takahashi, which have been exhibited around the world and garnered popularity as art that anyone can enjoy. Having air as its source material, which can freely change the size and shape, BABOT is filled with Shiro Takahashi’s idea of using technology to embody humor, softness, freedom, and gentleness. Have a look at all of its outlandish colors and forms. —Chihiro Minato

Shiro TAKAHASHI

A pioneer in the early days of media arts since the late 1960s, Takahashi participated in the 1970 Japan World Exposition in his twenties and subsequently produced many pioneering computer-controlled works. After his sudden death in 2021, the Takahashi Shiro Research Group was established within Tama Art University, where he taught, and has since been involved in the exhibition and introduction of Takahashi’s works. Recent major exhibitions include “Shiro Takahashi: Freedom Membrane” (Tama Art University Art-Theque Gallery, 2023) and “Shiro Takahashi: Kojiki: Mythological Art Technology” (Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki, 2020).
