Kannai District
Kannai district is the old city center that was the former checkpoint during the era of customs control at the time of the opening of Yokohama’s port to foreign trade.
The Bashamichi area was once home to trading houses and inspection stations engaged in the “raw silk trade” that laid the foundation of Japan's modern era since the opening of the port of Yokohama. Traces of its prosperous past can still be seen in the stone masonry bank buildings and other structures. Postwar “firebreak” buildings, which are now home to many artists and creators, are common in this area.
Minato Mirai 21 District
Minato Mirai 21’s development which was part of Yokohama’s Six Major Projects, marks 40 years since its initiation
With the 20th anniversary of the Minato Mirai Line, each station on the line and the King Axis area directly above BankART Station will feature contemporary art installations. This area will be connected to the Grand Mall axis in front of the Yokohama Museum of Art in April, making it easier for visitors to navigate the area. Be sure to venture to Pukari Sambashi Pier and PLOT48 for more exhibitions.
Yokohama Portside Area
Yokohama Portside Area was developed in the 1980s under the tagline “The City of Art & Design.”
Relevant artworks will be inserted into everyday spaces around the Portside area, from the Yokohama Bay Quarter, (a commercial shopping complex connected to the East Exit of Yokohama Station), through the business district and high-rise residential area, and to the Yokohama Central Wholesale Market Street Shopping Association adjacent to the fish market. (Co-sponsored by the Yokohama Portside Urban Development Association).
* The program in the Yokohama Portside Area is a joint project with the Yokohama Portside Urban Develop- ment Association. Please note that viewing hours and dates are subject to the facilities and stores’ operation. Please check ahead with the locations ahead of time.
